Live kitchen

Practice for flexibility in everyday life

Introduction to our research lines

What would happen if we subtly spinned around one of the pieces which support a Jenga tower?

The tower would totter, but it would keep on being a tower.

Would it be, however, the same tower?

Our daily life is organised through habits which we normally don't question. We live with the conviction that our procedures are the most logic and effective ones. We don't stop to consider that other ways of operating are also possible.

The goal of our research is to review the mechanisms of these habits and experiences of everyday life from other perspectives.

In order to develop our practice, we've chosen the habit of cooking.

However, we introduce a variation in this habit – we don't know where the ingredients are placed- thereby modifying the fundamental pillars which support this action. From that premise, we have developed a series of rules and recommendations which allow us to reestablish a new order in the action of cooking.

Consequently, we are actually questioning the habit of cooking by displaying a series of possibilities which are normally missed in daily life, but which potentially exist.

Thus, the action of cooking becomes an alchemical practice where we learn how to discern the fine from the thick, how to sense the subtle in our everyday lives.

Live Kitchen is an alternative to the mechanization of life, it's a flexibility exercice that everybody can do and that does'nt need of any extra ressources.

We are all able and responsible of building our own reality and allowing the extraordinary to show up from the ordinary.

Why are we doing Live Kitchen?

Live Kitchen is the beginning of a long-term project that we aim to develop as a research work. Our aim is to get to experience several daily life habits in a flexible way. When we say flexible, we actually mean being able to create other ways of approaching those everyday actions which we don't normally question. Our project focuses on creating a larger manual called Flexibility in Daily Life which will collect other everyday-life habits – like, for example, having a shower or having a conversation-.

We consider this as a political gesture, since it is an opened pratice that doesn't need any extra ressources or any previous experience to be accomplished. It is also an anti-fantasy exercice: we don't expect to manipulate the audience by building fantasy. On the contrary, we are leading the audience to a quotidian condition to build all the performance from that non-manipulative position.

We consider that this practice can be carried out by anyone in a daily life context. Therefore, we have writen a guide to accomplish this practice on one's own.

Throughout our own practice, we have written a series of rules and recommendations that anyone should follow in order to accomplish this practice on flexibility in daily life focused on the action of cooking.
